ECD Wipe Test
Most labs test their ECDs every one to three years. When did you last test yours?
Electron Capture Detectors contain a radioactive source. Wipe testing is a legal requirement in most countries, and intervals are shorter than many labs expect.
Ellutia is a registered laboratory, qualified to handle and analyse radioactive materials in line with UK radiation safety regulations
Kit supplied, analysis included
The kit contains everything you need to take the sample. Return it to Ellutia and we handle the rest.
Signed report on every test
Every analysis produces a detailed, signed report. Keep it for your records and submit it to the relevant regulatory authority.
Clear, simple process
The kit contains everything you need, including swabs, vials, and step-by-step instructions. One kit covers one detector.
Why wipe testing is required
Electron Capture Detectors use a small radioactive source, typically Nickel-63, to measure compounds in a gas chromatography system. Because of this, they fall under radiation safety regulations.
Wipe testing checks the external surface of the detector for radioactive contamination. It is required at first installation and periodically from that point on. In most countries, re-testing is required every one to three years, though your national legislation or internal company policy may set a shorter interval.
If you are unsure when your detector was last tested, the answer is to test it.
What the wipe test kit includes
The Ellutia wipe test kit contains everything needed to take a surface sample from your detector. Each kit covers a single detector analysis.
- Swabs and vials for sample collection
- Printed instructions for performing the wipe
- Return details for sending samples to Ellutia
- Analysis by qualified personnel at Ellutia
- A detailed, signed report on the outcome
- Immediate notification if contamination is detected
How it works
Order the kit
Place your order through the Ellutia store. The kit is dispatched and contains everything you need to take the sample.
Perform the wipe
Follow the instructions provided with the kit. Swabbing takes a matter of minutes and no specialist equipment is required.
Return the samples
Send the collected samples back to Ellutia. Full return instructions are included in the kit.
Receive your report
Ellutia analyses the samples and provides a detailed, signed report. If any issue is identified, you are notified immediately.
Need to dispose of an old ECD instead?
If your ECD is no longer in use, wipe testing is not the answer. Holding a Ni-63 source without the correct licence is not permitted, even temporarily. Ellutia is licensed to take ownership of and dispose of ECDs in line with UK radiation safety regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
How often do I need to wipe test my ECD?
In most countries, wipe testing is required at first installation and periodically thereafter. Re-testing intervals are typically every one to three years, though your national legislation or internal company policy may set a shorter interval. If you are unsure when your detector was last tested, the answer is to test it.
-
What detectors does the kit cover?
Each kit is designed for a single detector analysis. If you have multiple ECDs on site, you will need one kit per detector.
-
What is Ni-63 and why does it require testing?
Nickel-63 is a low-energy radioactive isotope used as the source in Electron Capture Detectors. Because it is a regulated radioactive material, its use and maintenance are governed by radiation safety legislation. Wipe testing checks the external surface of the detector for contamination.
-
What happens if contamination is detected?
If the analysis identifies any issue, Ellutia will contact you immediately. The signed report will detail the findings and outline the next steps.
-
Can I perform the wipe test myself?
Yes. The kit includes step-by-step instructions and everything needed to take the sample. You return the samples to Ellutia and we handle the laboratory analysis.
-
What documentation will I receive?
Every analysis produces a detailed, signed report. This can be kept for your internal records and submitted to the relevant regulatory authority.
