Licensed Ni-63 disposal
We are licensed to assess, take ownership of, and dispose of Electron Capture Detectors containing Nickel-63. All disposal is handled in line with UK radiation safety and environmental regulations.
Ownership and paperwork
Once agreed, we take ownership of the radioactive source after it is received by Ellutia. From that point, we manage the disposal process and provide documentation for your records and compliance reporting.

When ECDs become a problem
Electron Capture Detectors used in gas chromatography contain a Nickel-63 radioactive source.
When an ECD is no longer in use or has been removed from an instrument, how it is stored and disposed of matters. Holding a Ni-63 source without the correct licence is not permitted, even if it is kept temporarily.
If you have redundant ECDs on site, disposal needs to be handled properly and documented correctly.
What we handle
- Review the detector details
- Confirm whether disposal is required

Frequently Asked Questions
-

No. Once we’ve confirmed the details, we’ll provide clear instructions on how to send the detector to Ellutia. After it is received, we take ownership of the source and handle the disposal process from there.
-
What is the ECD is no longer installed or in use?
An Electron Capture Detector containing a Ni-63 source still needs to be handled correctly, even if it has been removed from an instrument or is no longer in use. Storage and disposal are still regulated.
-
What if I don't know exactly what detector I have?
That’s fine. Share what you know when requesting a quote and we’ll help confirm the detector type and whether disposal is required.
-
What documentation will I receive?
Once disposal is complete, we provide documentation for your records and compliance reporting.
-
Is requesting a quote a commitment?
No. Requesting a quote simply allows us to confirm whether action is required and outline the next steps. There’s no obligation to proceed.
